Eagles at BPA Nationals

Jairo Ruiz

“We are met in a spirit of friendship and goodwill as we prepare for careers in a world-class workforce.  We work together to develop professionalism and leadership through Business Professionals of America and pledge our loyalty to our nation.” This is the Business Professionals of America pledge and no other members in DeSoto embody this pledge more then our very own Jayla Kilson and Christopher Draughn. Jayla is the senior class valedictorian and Chris is an intern for the IT department in the high school. Making Nationals in BPA is an honor in BPA you compete against some of the sharpest and brightest minds in the future business world.

Jayla’s competition, which lead her to nationals, was fundamentals of HTML and CSS programing dedicating atleast a few hours every week to prepare for the exam. BPA has provided Jayla with the opportunity to learn new skills that she says she “would never have learned if it wasn’t for BPA” she said that “On her own she maybe would’ve gotten interested a little bit play around with it but then fall off”. Jayla’s first two years in the club were spent as the clubs secretary and in her third year she spent it as the president of the club which all gave her the opportunity to obtain a leadership position and make her a stronger leader even when she says “things fell apart”, but in the face of adversity she arose to the challenge to provide what she says “benefited all of us it’s not just me or one person’s feelings but the entirety of BPA”. Jayla spent her four years of high school in the club. She had some advice for the members and that was to “Never give up” and jump on every opportunity because “BPA can make you very successful”.

Chris just like Jayla has also been a member for all four years he spent in high school and this year will be his second time going to nationals. Chris’s competition that has taken him to nationals again was computer-networking technologies. Chris emphasized for the members who want to take BPA seriously to “Not slack” he admits that BPA could be for everyone but you have to want to work. Since Chris has been interning for the IT department at the school he has learned so much more about his competition seeing as they correlate with one another he also takes anytime of the day were it’s quite to read his book for thirty minutes to an hour. Chris and Jayla two prime examples of what a BPA member should be like. Chris and Jayla are going to miss BPA and are very excited for their final competition at nationals this year.
